Guitar Strap Guide

Factors to Consider When Shopping for a Guitar Strap

In case you usually play your guitar standing up, you understand the importance of a guitar strap. Finding such a strap is effortless because there are plenty of them available. The bad news is that you will have to sift through many of the available options to find one that would be ideal for you. What factors should you consider when choosing the same?

Consider material prior to making a choice. There is a plethora of guitar strap materials out there, and each has its strengths and weaknesses. Some of the most common materials include nylon, cotton, leather, and vinyl. Vinyl is expensive, but it offers a lot regarding comfort and durability. Cotton straps are cheaper compared to vinyl and they are more comfortable than nylon because they do not cut into the shoulders.  Nylon is cheap and functional, but it always looks cheap compared to all other materials. If you are looking for a strap that offers a lot regarding style, strength, and comfort, you should narrow down your search to leather straps.

Take note of strap width prior to making a decision. The width of your strap can affect its mobility and comfort. A narrow strap does not distribute weight evenly over your shoulder. Such a strap would most likely to be taxing to your shoulder, especially if you would be playing your guitar for long. A heavy guitar would also require a wider strap. Before making a decision on width, understand that an excessively wide strap is likely to restrict maneuverability. To be on the safe side, it is important to try your choice strap prior to making a decision.

Consider length prior to making a decision. While most brands of personalized guitar straps are adjustable, it is important to know how long your choice strap is from button to button. Before deciding on length, it is important to consider the height at which you would be comfortable playing your guitar. If you prefer playing it at knee height, you obviously need and extra long strap. In case you are tall, it is important to make a decision with that in mind.

Take note of extra features such as padded shoulders and strap locks. Extra padding on the shoulder region guarantees comfort, especially if your guitar is heavy or you would be playing for long periods while standing up. Guitar straps locks secure a guitar firmly to its strap, which is important, particularly if you have a costly guitar that you must protect.
